Perfect Weekend at Project Achievement

March 2-4, three Walker County 4-H’ers traveled to Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, GA to compete with over 600 other 4-H’ers from the 39 Northwest District counties. Walker County had a PERFECT weekend with all three competitors placing first place in their public speaking projects.

Camilla Carter, Chattanooga Christian School, 8th grade, 1st Place, Environmental Science project

Dalton Green, Gordon Lee Middle School, 7th grade, 1st place, Beef project

Julia Yearout, Chattanooga Valley Middle School, 7th grade, 1st place, Wildlife project

Any 7th-12th grade 4-H’er may participate in Junior/Senior Northwest District 4-H Project Achievement. A portfolio is completed in advance and given to the county agent before the end of the previous year. The portfolio is a record of the 4-H’ers work over the previous year and counts as 40% of the total score for Junior 4-H’ers (7-8 grade) and 50% for Senior 4-H’ers (9-12 grade). A presentation (or performance) is given during the March competition. Most presentations are limited to 10-12 minutes with the exception of public speaking and performing arts projects. . The presentation counts as 60% of the total score for Junior 4-H’ers (7-8 grade) and 50% for Senior 4-H’ers (9-12 grade). This project is to give recognition for outstanding accomplishments in 4-H work and to provide an out-of-county educational experience.

Both Green and Yearout campaigned over the weekend for the chance to be elected to the Junior District Board. Both were voted into the board by over 300 of their peers. They began their term in office on March 3, 2012 and will end in March 2013. They represent all of the 7-8 grade 4-H’ers in the 39 Northwest District 4-H counties.
